Winter is coming...
We’re bedding down for winter at the White Heron Estate, but we don’t go into hibernation – the chance would be a fine thing! All kinds of pruning and tidying has to be done in the cider orchards, blackcurrant fields and vineyards. Apple pruning takes a few months, blackcurrant pruning is done mechanically first and then by hand. The pic above shows blackcurrant plant gap filling in the mist this week, and we'll be planting more blackcurrant cuttings as soon as it’s a bit dryer underfoot. Grape pruning will start after Christmas, and involves a pre-prune by machine and tidy up by hand afterwards – time consuming but worth it to maximise the crops. It’s hard work growing the best fruit to make our delicious drinks…. In the meantime, enjoy a winter warmer - perhaps a Mulled Apple & Cassis juice mulled apple juice with British Cassis and mulling spices -cloves, star anise, cinnamon, and zest of an orange. Warming and delicious!
